As I expected, the proposed amendment to Article 12 of the UTU Constitution was approved by 86% of the ballots returned. By this change, the International will now be looking for benefit offerings designed to protect members income and well-being during times of accident or injury, on or off the job. These benefits will be guaranteed (do not require physical and cannot be exempt due to pre-existing condition) and offered at member cost through payroll deduction on a voluntary opt-out basis.
It will be important to stay tuned for more news regarding disability insurance, the first offering under this plan. At this time, I know nothing of the details, though I'm sure they will soon be posted at www.utu.org. Each of you will have the opportunity to complete and submit an opt-out form, if you desire not to participate. More information will be posted as it comes available.
