Re:     Bellevue Hyatt Shuttle

This past weekend, I was informed that there were several confrontations between GLS supervisors and drivers regarding the safety of performing a shuttle through the driveway of the Bellevue Hyatt Hotel.

Some drivers were told to go in the drive when it was extremely congested and posed a safety risk.  Friday night was very busy with the hotel valet parking and other shuttle vans using the same area.

Admittedly, there were other times when it was not congested and could be used safely.

My concern is that the on-scene expeditor ordered drivers to go into an area where they felt the situation posed a significant danger to the motorcoach and parked cars.   The expeditor claimed that she was the boss and the drivers had to do what she said.

I realize the expeditor might have been in a very stressful situation dealing with the charter customer, passengers and drivers.  However, it is company policy that the drivers have the ultimate say in where a motorcoach is going.  If the drivers determine that it is not safe, then an alternate location needs to be found.

At this location, the NE 8th Ave. side has a recessed curb just west of the entrance drive to the hotel that would have been much safer.  Some drivers used the Bellevue Way side where they had to block a lane of traffic.  That was better than the hotel driveway.

So, please, make sure supervisors know that a driver’s safety record is dependent upon recognizing dangerous locations and avoiding them.  We will gladly work with the

on-site staff to determine safe alternatives.

Sincerely,

Paul
