Re:     Incentive/Bonus Program

As all of you know, the peak days for GLS this summer are Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Ben and Mollie approached me with a concern:  how might we motivate more people to work on weekends?  That is where the need is.  How can we work together on solving this situation?

After some discussion, Ben proposed an incentive plan that would provide a financial bonus to those who gave up valuable weekend time to help meet the company’s need.  Last year, a lot of money was spent on purchased transportation (farmouts).  They said they would prefer spending that extra money for their own drivers instead of the competition.

This program has two parts to it.  You can participate in both, one or none.  It is completely your choice whether or not you wish to take advantage of this program.

Now, some of the vice-chairpersons were a bit skeptical about the fairness of this program.  They raised pertinent questions, many of which are answered by Mollie’s frequently asked questions (FAQ) letter.  This offer will not affect seniority.  The dispatch sheets will still be filled out in seniority order.  If anyone in this bonus program made themselves available and did not get assigned, he or she will still have earned a peak day as if they actually had been assigned.  It is available to both charter board AND bid drivers.

For years, I have preached to management about incentive programs for the less-than-desirable work.  Now, the company has offered one and I would like to try it.  This is in addition to lunch cards and gas cards.  It is a step in the right direction.  Let’s capitalize on it.

Any questions or concerns should be addressed to me.  Put a note in locker #9.

Thank you,

Paul
